Max Hale

Max was educated at Harrow Art School and spent some time afterwards in London commercial studios doing story illustration. Returning to fine art as soon as he could Max has been painting all his life. His love of figures and faces is obvious as almost every painting includes people in them somewhere. Max says that paintings come alive with people and human interest gives a piece of work scale and interest. He works in all media and his training as a graphic artist helps a great deal when constructing a painting.

Max tutors a variety of subjects but also says ‘I get so many requests for drawing workshops, drawing and sketching are a very significant part of an artist’s foundation and it can make such a difference to creative dexterity. I often get asked to tutor charcoal and pencil drawing to groups that have never had formal instruction in the media, they feel so empowered at the end’

Max lives in Wiltshire and travels all across the south and  west demonstrating and tutoring.’ I’m fortunate in having broad understanding of most media, one day I can be doing a watercolour portrait  and the next an acrylic or pastel still life. Max is a versatile tutor although he says that teaching his students how to see and free up their minds is the key to his success.
