Oil & Acrylic Painting Course

The tutors are experienced in teaching both acrylic and oil painting techniques as well as working with beginners and experienced students. As well as guiding them through the use of materials and technique, they will enable students to set up a painting and follow through the different stages of handling composition, tone, colour, line and perspective, encouraging their own personal way of interpreting what they see.

Tutors may give demonstrations and talks about different aspects of painting. The choice of acrylic or oil paint for the first-time painter depends on what the student wants to achieve. Acrylic paints are easier to handle, dry fast and are water soluble. Each layer goes on covering the one before it, and as a result a somewhat flat and opaque finish is the result. Oils by contrast are harder to handle as the paint stays wet, and further layers can blend in with the ones beneath, sometimes leading to a messier canvas. However the transparency, variety of colour and brush mark makes for a painting with much more depth, interest and character. It can be well worth the greater challenge.

Our popular painting courses vary according to the Tutors’ own particular way of teaching, and choice of routine, but generally include sketching, working from still life, working from sketches and a mid week excursion.
